What is Soil Tension?

The Hortau Wireless Irrigation Management System is based on the measurement of soil tension to determine the exact water availability. Soil tension is defined as the succion exerted by soil particles onto the water they hold.

  • Soil tension is the force which water is retained in soil pores
  • A measurement of the amount of water available to plants
  • A parameter directly related to plant stress; from an agronomic perspective, soil tension influences plant growth and performance

Agricultural production decisions must be centered around plant water stress management. Measurin soil tension is by far the best irrigation management method available and enables producers to boost yield and obtain superior crop performance.

This example shows that water content measurement does not allow for precise determination of irrigation starting point; this approach generates plant stress episodes before irrigating. This plant stress, in turn, generates cumulative yield losses that can make a major yield difference at harvest time.

That's why soil tension measurement is the best way to ensure efficient and profitable irrigation management!
